Are Hybrid Cars Part of the Solution?

Guest Article:

Often we have conversations with people who are unconvinced that electric cars are a viable part of the future for the car industry, but very often these people do think that the motor industry will have to move swiftly away from oil reliance - inevitably the question arises as to whether hybrid cars are the solution.

Our thinking at ElectricCarSite is that electric cars are long term a much greener and sustainable part of our future since they can be omission free and ultimately fueled by renewable energy. In contrast hybrids remain reliant on fossil fuels and still produce huge amounts of harmful emissions. However, thats not to say we don't support them as part of the way to a sustainable motoring future. The real answer as with so many things in life is throwing everything we can at the problem in hand - that includes improving mass transport (buses, trains), incentivising development of the electric car network, funding research into other technologies including hydrogen, but also allowing interim solutions such as hybrid technologies to flourish as well.

Our slight reservation is that hybrid cars can give the impression of being a solution when in fact they realistically are not sustainable long term. We would also hate to think that hybrid technology prevents faster paced development of the electric car market but in fact hybrids will continue to aid development of good batteries, more efficient cars and everything else.
