Typ1e

From a design point of view the 11 strong Californian-based Aptera team are definitely doing something quite different with this electric car.

1984 Fusion Human Powered CarThe Typ-1e is quite a radical vehicle design but is not unique and owes much to the design of mid-80s human-powered vehicles such as the Pegasus and Fusion.

Fusion - 1984

The whole point of the design is to make this a low energy vehicle, mainly by reducing drag to make it as aerodynamic as possible but also modern materials to make it as light as possible (within the requirements of the Californian Vehicle Code).

Aptera - 2008

The Typ-1e has three-wheels, just like a good old Robin Reliant in reverse!  The two front wheels steer, and the rear wheel is driven by the electric motor.  Electricity is stored in lithium phosphate batteries.  Aptera claim it can travel up to 190 km (120 miles) on a single charge.  The electric batteries are aided by roof-mounted solar cells.

Aptera also have a diesel hybrid version of this vehicle planned for launch in 2009.  This will have a longer range and consequently a slightly higher price tag at $30,000 (£20,000).  Currently Aptera are focussing on the Californian market but they do hope, if succesful to expands across the states and into Europe.

Aptera 2e

The Typ-1e has now been superceeded by the 2e.  The Aptera 2 Series is still a high-efficiency electric vehicle.  Aptera is currently taking pre-orders from Californian residents for this two-seater.  The Aptera 2e accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 10s with a top speed of 85 mph+.  The plan is to follow the all-electric Aptera 2e (formerly the Typ-1e) with a plug-in hybrid, the Aptera 2h (formerly the Typ-1h).  Pricing is looking at the $20,000-$40,000 depending on production costs.  Information can be found here Aptera 2 series electric cars.
